I think Gary Oldman is one of the great actors in cinema today. This gumshoe style flick, complete with narration and the jazz soundtrack, was probably one of the strangest performances Ive seen by him. True Romance came out the same year as this movie did. Makes sense since his role wasn't that big in True Romance...
but this character seemed to have it all in the start of the film...and it slowly unravelled. Gary Oldman plays a corrupt cop specializing in leaking the whereabouts of witnesses who plan to testify against the mob. When through a twist of events is forced to kill a Russian Hit-Woman. The Hit-Woman was fantastically played by Lena Olin...OMG that character was ruthless...To cut one's own arm off! Crickey!
I still do have lots of questions after seeing this movie twice. Like, why would the Hit-Woman go to to the extreme of cutting her arm off and faking her death, and then turn around and go to the cops and cooperate? Once busted, the cops send Gary Oldman a letter saying they are ashamed of him, yet in reality they want him to blow the Hit-Woman away and put him in protective custody? That's just a couple of the big ones. I'm sure if i watch it a few more times, my questions will turn into theories. Either way this movie is sure to spark a lot of cool discussion to the group, on top of being a really cool movie. Nice choice Bud!
